The Malian Armed Forces (Forces Armées Maliennes, FAMA) were frequently implicated in serious abuses, targeting civilians from the Peuhl and Dogon ethnic groups. The abuses largely ceased after the military handed detainees over to government gendarmes. Among the cases described to Human Rights Watch: some 10 Peuhl men, including a 55-year-old local chief, who were hogtied, suspended by a pole, and severely beaten at the military base in Nampala."
