According to Amnesty International: "Information gathered by Amnesty International indicates that security forces have used unnecessary and excessive force while arresting students during demonstrations, alleged Islamists and people arrested for common law offences. [...] People suspected of terrorism were beaten in public when arrested by the security forces. [...] A seller of mobile phones was arrested on 27 December 2011 in Kiffa (600 km south-east of Nouakchott,the capital) suspected of being an AQMI member. He was handcuffed, blindfolded and beaten in the market place in front of members of the public. He was subsequently detained and sentenced to prison." [+]
